Established in early 1995, Pemberley has risen to great heights from its very humble beginnings. With roots in a small game named Golden Stirrups, the farm had gone through many incarnations in several different games before the decision was made to finally recombine all the divisions and settle down here, in beautiful Peterborough, Ontario. With 12 years simulation gaming experience and a lifetime of equine involvement, it's no surprise that several of the simulation world's greatest call Pemberley home.

When Maya Kenedy purchased two Thoroughbreds in 1995, no one imagined that these two horses would be the start of a racing empire to rival any other in the simulation world. The chestnut colt, as yet untried on the track, was future Triple Crown winner CAPTAIN PROTON. He now stands stud at Pemberley, proving time and again his prepotency. The bay filly was MIDNIGHT CHARADE, who, despite sitting out her two and three year old seasons due to shin problems, went on to win two Breeder's Cup Distaffs among multiple other stakes wins and is the granddam of multiple stakes winner BATTLECRY OF COURAGE.

Other early-year Pemberley horses quickly followed in their footsteps. The farm captured its second Triple Crown with UNCERTAIN DESTINY in 1999. The grey filly's story made her a fan favourite; a $4000 'ugly duckling' of a yearling with crooked forelegs who grew into a champion, 'Dusty' still has a public following waiting for one of her foals to follow her legacy. Also in 1999, CONVERSATION PIECE charged to a dominating 5 length win in the TROT Belmont Stakes after being denied entry into the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes when he failed to meet the Lifetime Earnings cut. Other horses who propelled the farm to the top of the industry in its early years include Breeder's Cup Juvenile winner VALET PARKING, the great filly FLAWLESSLY, and the farm's third Triple Crown winner, FLAME THROWER (now deceased).

Following these early successes, the farm was forced into a semi-hiatus due to outside obligations. The stars were still there, but they were fewer in number and under the radar while they bounced from game to game as the farm struggled to regain its footing in the quickly expanding simulation Thoroughbred racing industry. Most of the horses who raced under Pemberley's colours during this time are no longer with the farm, with the majority going on to new homes. The farm thinned its ranks in an effort to decrease the size of its massive racing and training operation due to Ms. Kenedy's growing lack of available time to devote to the simulation world.

This quiet period in the farm's history ended in 2002 with the arrival of a chestnut two year old filly who would take the world by storm -- PERFECTLY SANE finished off the board in only 4 of 35 starts throughout a three-year career. She captured wins in 11 stakes races, including the Santa Anita Oaks, Beldame Stakes, and Ruffian Handicap, and in doing so catapaulted Pemberley back to the top of the leaderboard. 2003 also introduced new blood to Ms. Kenedy's racing string. The big, black ENTOURAGE was a $150 000 two year old and would go on to win the 2004 Kentucky Derby as well as 4 other stakes races, while MIGHTY KING, a $125 000 yearling, became a two year old star. Both stallions currently stand stud at Pemberley. This era also marked the beginning of the farm's first serious venture into Thoroughbred breeding, with the acquisition of two incomperable and already proven sires -- COOL RUNNINGS and SHOW ME THE NIGHTMARES.

This brings us to the farm today. Recent stars including ONE FINE DAY, AFLEET, PORTCULLIS, and a multitude of others call Pemberley home, and in the weanling and yearling paddocks, future champions are being developed. The newer breeding program is going strong, and Pemberley homebreds are beginning to make a name for themselves rivalling that which defines the farm's training program. Prospects are looking bright; who knows what the future has in store!

State-of-the-art facilities combined with highly trained and passionate staff make Pemberley ideal for all horses, from newborn foals to mature breeding stallions and broodmares. Each horse is provided with individual attention and a custom-tailored daily routine designed to meet every need. The farm prides itself on raising happy, healthy, and sound young horses who maintain the same level of happines, health, and soundess throughout their racing years and beyond.

Set in the northeast section of the thousand acre property, the main barn, pictured above, contains different wings housing all of Pemberley's youngstock, currently racing horses, and broodmares. In the photograph below, the 25-stall stallion barn can be seen in the foreground, and the 10 stall quarantine barn is visible in the top right-hand corner. Not pictured is the temporary stabling complex, consisting of an old bank barn converted to house up to 200 visiting or overflow horses. All barns are equipped with an overhead fan system to ensure proper air circulation while eliminating drafts, and as safety is the number one priority, a smoke/carbon monoxide detector system and a heat-sensitive overhead sprinkler system have also been installed in all barn areas. Indoor and outdoor aisleways and walkways are a minimum of 20' wide, and are footed with interlocking rubber bricks to ensure maximum traction and drainage. Each barn also offers secure tack and feed rooms, as well as climate controlled offices for the farm's hard-working staff members. A heated/air-conditioned lounge is found in the indoor racing complex, with bay windows overlooking the indoor racetrack. Aisleway crossties are provided in the main barn only, while wash stalls and grooming stalls are found in all barns. Standard stalls are 16'x16', with stallions residing in 16'x20' stalls, and broodmares using 16'x25' foaling stalls. All stalls are wood panelled, with sliding doors and vertical iron bar fronts. Installed throughout all the barns are 'Paddock-Mat' flooring systems, a series of rubber-crumb filled air cells approximately 4 inches thick and covered by a carpet-like mat. This system is proven to reduce stress on legs, to reduce healing time in cases of injury, and to increase comfort levels in horses suffering from chronic lameness and soreness. Wood shavings, pellets, or shredded paper are used as bedding, depending on the individual. Additionally, the broodmare wing is fully equipped to monitor mares with a wireless camera system feeding through to the barn office and lounge. There, a complete monitoring station is set up, with live feeds and multiple screens.

All turnout areas are double fences with 4 rail post-and-plank fences, checked daily for damage. Stallion turnouts are made taller, and are reinforced with two strands of electric wire. Any turnouts housing young horses have the bottom 3' of fencing made of solid wood to prevent escapes and injuries. Plentiful water supplies, checked and cleaned daily, and large run-ins are always available to all turned out horses.

The racing facilities are among the most impressive in the area, with the focal point being the two-mile turf course surrounding an inner polytrack course. Also offered are 5 1/2 furlong indoor and 5 furlong outdoor polytrack courses. All tracks are fully equipped with automatic timers, finish cameras, floodlights, and starting gate facilities, while the outdoor tracks also offer grandstand seating along the backstretch. Also found within the racing complex are 5 30' breaking pens, 5 automatic walkers, and a covered walking ring. Additionally, many kilometers of trails have been marked throughout the many forests and fields at Pemberley, and one can never tell which pond, stream, or small lake will be found while out for a conditioning gallop or hill excercise.

Pemberley's breeding and veterinary facilities have helped the farm to stand out among competitors. With a state of the art veterinary hospital on the property and 5 veterinarians (including two reproductive specialists) currently in residence, there is always someone on call, 24 hours a day. Surgeries and any other complex procedures can be performed on-site, reducing stress to the patients and ensuring no time is wasted in transport. In a seperate wing of the hospital, the farm offers a fully-functional collection, storage, and testing centre for semen, cultures, and blood work. All labs and equipment are right in the building, so clients need never wait for results any longer than necessary. Attached to this area is a large breeding shed for live-cover procedures. Also found in the hospital complex are two modified swimming pools for equine therapy, floored with rubber mats and incorporating easy to negotiate entrance and exit ramps. An underwater treadmill can be put into use in either pool, or else an above-water version is also found in the facility, complete with all vital sign indicators and recording devices. The full radiology suite is easily accessed by equines through full-sized exterior doors, and there are multiple research labs and surgical suites located throughout the complex.
